Veterinary Nurse Jobs UK

Veterinary nurses are an indispensable part of any successful vet practice or hospital. Working alongside the veterinary surgeon, they’re involved in routine diagnostic workups and ensure that animals get the highest standards of care.

Vet nurses also have a vital role to play in educating owners on the health and care of their animals, advising on preventive routines like deworming and offering specialised support.

Vet Nurse Salaries in the UK

Here’s a breakdown of typical veterinary nurse salaries in the UK

  • Entry-Level (Newly Qualified): £22,000 – £25,000 per year. For vet nurses just starting their careers or completing training.
  • Mid-Level (2-5 Years Experience): £25,000 – £32,000 per year
For those with a few years of experience and developing specialised skills.
  • Senior Level / Specialist: £30,000 – £42,000 per year
For senior nurses or those specialising in areas such as anaesthesia, surgical nursing, or emergency care, especially in referral hospitals or specialised clinics. Senior head vet nurses will be more involved in the management and leadership of a team of nurses and other support staff, in addition to their day to day duties.

Many practices also offer additional benefits, such as CPD (Continuing Professional Development) allowances, paid membership to professional bodies, and further training opportunities, which enhance the overall compensation package for vet nurses.

Where Do Vet Nurses Work in the UK?

Veterinary nurses have diverse career opportunities across different settings in the UK.

Many choose to work in Urban Clinics and Hospitals (e.g., LondonManchester or Birmingham) dealing with pets like cats, dogs, and even exotic species. These environments offer a fast-paced, varied workload with access to advanced medical technology.

However, there also opportunities in more Rural Practices (e.g., Cornwall,WalesNorthern Ireland). In more rural areas, vet nurses may work in settings that handle a combination of farm animals, pets, and sometimes wildlife.

You may also want to consider becoming a locum vet nurse, ideal for those seeking greater flexibility in their career. A locum vet nurse provides temporary cover for a practice when staffing levels are low because of parental leave, illness, holidays or resignations.
