Small Animal Vet Surgeon Job, Barnes, London, England

Small Animal Vet Surgeon Job, Barnes, London, England

Job Description: Our client is seeking an experienced and clinically confident Veterinary Surgeon to take on a rewarding position offering considerable professional independence and opportunities to manage a diverse small animal caseload. The ideal candidate will bring at least three years of practical veterinary experience, strong general practice capabilities and proficiency in performing comprehensive abdominal ultrasound examinations. The position provides exposure to routine and advanced medical presentations, including soft tissue surgery and orthopaedic cases, allowing the successful applicant to further refine their diagnostic and surgical expertise.

The clinical environment features modern diagnostic equipment, including digital radiography, in-house haematology and biochemistry analysers, and advanced blood pressure monitoring systems. Working alongside two experienced veterinary surgeons, a Head Registered Veterinary Nurse, a student veterinary nurse and additional support professionals, the successful candidate will benefit from collaborative case management while retaining responsibility for independent clinical decisions.

A standard working arrangement consists of 40 hours across four days, accompanied by a one-in-six weekend rotation at a nearby 24-hour veterinary facility. Additional commitments include approximately two to three weeks of on-call duties and three bank holidays annually. Part-time arrangements may also be considered, providing flexibility for applicants seeking a different working pattern.

Qualifications Needed:

  • A minimum of three years of clinical experience with strong competence in small animal general practice
  • Current RCVS registration and the necessary professional qualifications to practise veterinary medicine
  • Demonstrated proficiency in performing and interpreting full abdominal ultrasound examinations
  • Sound clinical judgement with the confidence to manage independent consultations and surgical cases
  • A collaborative mindset combined with excellent client communication and patient care standards

In this position, your responsibilities will include:

  • Managing complex and routine clinical presentations through comprehensive diagnostic investigations and appropriate treatments
  • Performing abdominal ultrasonography and interpreting findings to support accurate clinical decisions
  • Maintaining high standards of surgical care, patient safety and professional regulatory compliance
  • Participating in scheduled weekend, bank holiday and out-of-hours clinical commitments
  • Coordinating treatment decisions with nursing colleagues while providing clear guidance to pet owners

Package:

  • A four-day working week comprising 40 hours, with consideration given to alternative part-time schedules
  • Professional development funding of £1,500 annually alongside three paid educational leave days
  • Comprehensive healthcare benefits featuring private medical insurance and a health cash plan
  • Opportunities to pursue funded postgraduate certificates and strengthen advanced clinical competencies
  • Five weeks of annual leave plus bank holidays, with increased entitlement based on service
  • RCVS, VDS and BVA professional membership subscriptions paid
  • Life assurance protection providing coverage equivalent to three times annual salary
  • An additional paid personal day and the possibility of extended leave arrangements following qualifying service
  • Confidential counselling assistance available 24 hours a day, supporting personal wellbeing
  • Commuting assistance through cycle purchase benefits and public transport season ticket arrangements
