Job Description: Our client is seeking an accomplished and forward-thinking Veterinary Medical Director to take a leading role in an established, AAHA-accredited veterinary practice combining general companion animal medicine with urgent care services. This opportunity is particularly suited to an experienced veterinarian who thrives on clinical variety, enjoys supporting fellow clinicians and wants to help shape the delivery of exceptional veterinary care. Working alongside a cooperative team of veterinary professionals, the successful candidate will balance hands-on clinical responsibilities with the opportunity to guide medical standards, encourage professional development and strengthen clinical decision-making.
The position offers exposure to a particularly diverse caseload, ranging from routine vaccinations and preventative healthcare to complex medical presentations, emergency assessments and urgent surgical conditions such as hemoabdomen. Patients primarily include dogs and cats, with the possibility of treating small mammals according to individual clinical experience. Spacious, well-equipped facilities support both general practice and urgent care, while established referral arrangements allow patients requiring overnight hospitalisation to receive continued treatment at nearby 24-hour facilities. Flexible working patterns, including three 12-hour shifts or four 10-hour shifts, offer opportunities to balance leadership responsibilities with personal commitments.
Qualifications Needed:
- A recognised Doctor of Veterinary Medicine qualification or equivalent veterinary degree, together with eligibility for California licensure.
- Proven ability to manage complicated medical presentations and confidently prioritise urgent clinical cases.
- An approachable leadership style that encourages constructive case discussions, professional mentoring and shared clinical decision-making.
- Sound experience in small animal medicine and surgery, with an appreciation for high standards of veterinary ethics and patient welfare.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the confidence to establish clear treatment plans while maintaining positive relationships with clients and colleagues.
Package:
- Generous signing incentive of up to $75,000 available for eligible applicants.
- Flexible full-time rota options, with existing clinicians working three 12-hour shifts or four 10-hour shifts and alternative arrangements open to discussion.
- Access to comprehensive medical, dental and vision insurance coverage, with additional healthcare provisions for eligible employees.
- Opportunity to direct clinical quality within an AAHA-accredited setting offering both routine veterinary services and urgent care.
- Retirement planning benefits through a 401(k) savings scheme with employer matching contributions.
- Paid time away from clinical duties, including annual vacation, parental leave and sick leave entitlements.
- Continuing education financial support, dedicated paid study days and access to additional veterinary training opportunities.
- Varied medical and urgent care caseload without overnight hospitalisation responsibilities, supported by established referral arrangements.
- Additional earning potential through applicable variable compensation programmes and discounted veterinary care for personal pets.
- Opportunities to participate in clinical research initiatives while collaborating with experienced veterinarians and support professionals.
