Small Animal Medical Director Veterinarian Job, New York, New York, USA

Job Description: Our client is seeking an accomplished Veterinary Medical Director to take responsibility for clinical leadership and patient care standards within an established, AAHA-accredited small animal practice. This full-time opportunity is ideal for an experienced veterinarian who enjoys combining clinical medicine with strategic decision-making, mentoring colleagues and developing high-performing veterinary services. The position offers substantial professional autonomy, with approximately 70% of working time dedicated to clinical duties and 30% focused on leadership responsibilities, allowing the successful candidate to influence medical direction while maintaining an active and rewarding caseload.

The role involves overseeing veterinary care for cats, dogs, rabbits and other small companion animals while working closely with experienced clinical and operational professionals. Modern facilities include hands-free radiography, diagnostic ultrasound and a separate dental suite equipped with high-speed dental instrumentation. The successful candidate will contribute to clinical planning, maintain excellent medical standards and support the continued development of veterinary colleagues, with additional operational and administrative resources available to assist with practice performance.

Qualifications Needed:

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree or equivalent recognised veterinary qualification from an accredited institution.
  • Current veterinary licensure in New York or eligibility to obtain the appropriate professional registration.
  • Substantial small animal clinical experience with the confidence to oversee veterinary services and guide medical decision-making.
  • Strong leadership, communication and organisational skills, with enthusiasm for mentoring colleagues and maintaining positive client relationships.
  • Commitment to ethical veterinary medicine, continuous clinical improvement and effective practice management.

In this position, your responsibilities will include:

  • Overseeing clinical quality and establishing effective medical protocols to maintain exceptional standards of patient care.
  • Providing comprehensive veterinary treatment for companion animals while maintaining an active clinical caseload.
  • Guiding veterinary colleagues through professional mentorship, case discussions and ongoing clinical development.
  • Collaborating with practice management to support operational efficiency, financial performance and long-term clinical planning.
  • Evaluating medical procedures, monitoring treatment outcomes and implementing improvements to veterinary service delivery.

Package:

  • Signing incentive of $25,000 available for eligible candidates accepting this medical leadership opportunity.
  • Clinical leadership position offering approximately 30% administrative responsibilities and 70% hands-on veterinary practice.
  • Access to advanced diagnostic equipment, including ultrasound, hands-free radiography and a dedicated dental treatment suite.
  • Comprehensive medical, dental and vision insurance options with additional healthcare benefits for eligible employees.
  • Employer-matched 401(k) retirement savings contributions supporting long-term financial planning.
  • Generous continuing education funding, paid professional development days and opportunities to strengthen leadership capabilities.
  • Paid annual vacation, parental leave and sick leave provisions supporting personal and professional commitments.
  • Full-time working arrangements within operating hours of 9 am to 7 pm on weekdays and 9 am to 5 pm on Saturdays.
  • Opportunities to participate in veterinary clinical research and develop additional areas of professional interest.
  • Discounted veterinary treatment for personal pets, experienced operational support and considerable influence over clinical service development.
