Job Description: Our client is seeking an experienced Small Animal Medical Director Veterinarian to guide clinical standards while remaining actively involved in consultations, diagnostics, treatment planning, and surgery. This full-time leadership opportunity is suited to a confident clinician who enjoys mentoring veterinarians, strengthening patient-care protocols, and encouraging consistent medical excellence across the hospital.
Working closely with the Practice Manager, the successful candidate will help shape operational priorities, support clinician development, and maintain compliance with relevant medical and controlled-substance regulations. The position combines hands-on veterinary medicine with team leadership, performance coaching, service development, and responsibility for creating an engaged and accountable working environment.
This role offers significant scope to influence clinical direction, introduce improved services, and lead regular discussions around case management and best practices. You will also support graduate development, externship activity, recruitment efforts, and constructive relationships within the wider community.
In this position, your responsibilities will include:
- Coach associate veterinarians through regular feedback, goal setting, and individual development planning.
- Set consistent expectations for clinical quality, client communication, efficiency, and patient safety.
- Partner with the Practice Manager on annual planning, financial performance, and operational improvements.
- Lead doctor meetings covering medical protocols, emerging services, and complex case discussions.
- Maintain an active clinical caseload while modelling sound medical judgement and professional conduct.
Qualifications Needed:
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree or an equivalent recognised veterinary qualification.
- Valid New York veterinary licence in good standing.
- At least two years of practical small animal clinical experience.
- Strong leadership, relationship-building, and written and verbal communication abilities.
- Interest in developing knowledge of veterinary hospital operations and financial management.
