Job Description: Our client is seeking an experienced and confident Small Animal Locum Veterinarian to provide essential clinical cover at an established veterinary practice during a period of unexpected staff leave. This opportunity is particularly suited to an independent companion animal clinician who enjoys managing a varied caseload and is comfortable taking primary responsibility for small animal consultations and treatment decisions. Experienced mixed animal veterinarians with strong companion animal capabilities are also encouraged to apply. The position is available from early November 2026 for approximately two to three months, with shorter placements of at least two weeks also welcomed.
The successful candidate will act as the principal companion animal veterinarian throughout their placement, providing continuity of care for existing patients and maintaining effective communication with pet owners. Although the role requires confidence in independent small animal practice, experienced mixed and production animal veterinarians will be working at the same location, offering opportunities for professional collaboration and practical assistance. This flexible locum opportunity is ideal for an established clinician seeking a rewarding temporary assignment with meaningful clinical responsibility.
Qualifications Needed:
- Recognised veterinary degree with current eligibility to practise in New Zealand.
- Substantial practical experience in companion animal medicine, with the ability to manage cases independently and make confident clinical decisions.
- Experienced mixed animal veterinarians will be considered, provided they possess strong small animal clinical skills.
- Excellent communication and organisational abilities, alongside a compassionate approach to patient care and client relationships.
- Availability for a placement beginning in early November 2026, ideally lasting two to three months, although assignments of two weeks or longer will be considered.
Package:
- Locum placement available from early November 2026, with opportunities for approximately two to three months of employment.
- Shorter assignments of at least two weeks considered, offering flexibility for veterinarians with existing professional commitments.

- A rewarding temporary position suited to experienced veterinarians who value professional independence.
- Access to veterinary colleagues working in mixed and production animal medicine for case discussions and professional collaboration.
- Opportunities to apply established diagnostic, medical and treatment skills across a varied companion animal caseload.
- Flexible engagement duration allowing candidates to discuss availability and suitable placement arrangements.
- An established clinical environment where experienced veterinarians can contribute to continuity of patient care during staff absence.
- Opportunity to develop meaningful relationships with pet owners while maintaining high standards of veterinary treatment.
