Small Animal Emergency Veterinarian Job, Westbury, New York, USA

Job Description: Our client is seeking a skilled Small Animal Emergency Veterinarian to join a busy 24-hour trauma, emergency, and referral hospital managing a diverse range of urgent and high-acuity cases. This full-time opportunity is suited to a confident clinician who works calmly under pressure, communicates clearly with pet owners, and values close collaboration with experienced emergency and specialty colleagues.

The successful candidate will manage emergency consultations, stabilise critically ill patients, develop diagnostic and treatment plans, and coordinate ongoing care with specialists in critical care, internal medicine, surgery, and oncology. The caseload is primarily companion animal, with some exposure to exotic patients.

Veterinarians are supported by experienced emergency technicians, including advanced emergency and critical care expertise, as well as access to sophisticated imaging and therapeutic resources. A teaching-focused environment with clinical rounds, case discussion, and mentorship encourages continued professional development and confident decision-making.

In this position, your responsibilities will include:

  • Assess, triage, and stabilise patients presenting with urgent or life-threatening conditions.
  • Manage emergency medical and surgical cases across a varied caseload.
  • Interpret diagnostic findings and establish appropriate treatment plans.
  • Communicate prognosis, treatment options, and ongoing care requirements clearly with clients.
  • Coordinate patient care with emergency, critical care, and specialty clinicians.
  • Maintain accurate medical records and provide clear case handovers.
  • Contribute to clinical rounds, team learning, and collaborative case review.

Qualifications Needed:

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree or an equivalent accredited qualification.
  • Current New York veterinary licence in good standing or eligibility to obtain one.
  • Previous emergency experience or a strong professional interest in emergency medicine.
  • Ability to make timely clinical decisions in a fast-paced hospital setting.
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and client-support skills.
  • Commitment to ethical practice and consistently high standards of patient care.

Package:

  • Full-time position within a 24-hour emergency and referral setting.
  • Variable compensation opportunities in addition to the annual base salary.
  • Continuing education allowance with paid professional development days.
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance options for eligible employees.
  • 401(k) retirement savings plan with employer matching contributions.
  • Paid parental, vacation, and sick leave provisions.
  • Employee discounts on eligible veterinary services.
  • Access to specialist collaboration, structured mentorship, and clinical rounds.
  • Experienced emergency technical support, including advanced critical care expertise.
  • Access to CT, MRI, ultrasound, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, and other advanced resources.
  • Dedicated social work support for clients, patients, and clinical teams.
  • Opportunities to participate in clinical studies and advanced learning.
