Small Animal Emergency Veterinarian Job, Sherwood Park, Alberta, Canada

Job Description: Our client is seeking a motivated and clinically capable Emergency Veterinarian to join a busy specialist emergency setting offering exposure to complex medical presentations and time-sensitive surgical cases. This opportunity is well suited to a veterinarian who enjoys fast-paced clinical work, demonstrates sound judgement under pressure and is eager to strengthen emergency and critical care expertise. With advanced diagnostic resources and opportunities to collaborate with experienced emergency clinicians, critical care specialists and skilled veterinary technicians, the position provides an engaging environment for developing practical emergency medicine capabilities.

The successful candidate will take responsibility for comprehensive patient assessments, diagnostic investigations, treatment planning and effective communication with pet owners throughout the clinical process. The role also involves supporting emergency nursing and reception colleagues, coordinating patient discharges and maintaining accurate medical documentation. An emphasis on professional development, clinical mentorship and efficient department operations makes this an appealing opportunity for veterinarians seeking to broaden their experience while contributing to high standards of emergency patient care.

Qualifications Needed:

  • Recognised veterinary degree with current Alberta veterinary registration or eligibility for licensing through the ABVMA
  • Previous veterinary experience, ideally including exposure to emergency medicine, although additional training may be considered
  • Familiarity with emergency stabilisation, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, intubation and focused diagnostic ultrasound
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to manage sensitive client conversations calmly and compassionately
  • Strong organisational abilities, professional initiative and confidence in supporting veterinary colleagues during demanding clinical situations

In this position, your responsibilities will include:

  • Evaluating urgent clinical presentations through physical examinations, diagnostic investigations and timely treatment decisions
  • Performing emergency procedures while developing proficiency in resuscitation and critical patient stabilisation
  • Coordinating clinical workflows and providing practical guidance to veterinary technicians and support professionals
  • Preparing comprehensive medical records, discharge instructions and communication for referring veterinarians
  • Ensuring effective client communication, accurate treatment estimates and adherence to veterinary regulatory standards

Package:

  • Additional shift-based compensation enhancements where applicable to scheduled emergency duties
  • Continuing professional education benefits supporting advanced clinical learning and veterinary skill development
  • Professional veterinary membership and registration expenses covered
  • Uniform allowance to assist with appropriate clinical workwear requirements
  • Discounted veterinary services and products for personal pets
  • Direct access to experienced critical care specialists and emergency veterinary colleagues for complex case discussions
  • Opportunities to strengthen clinical leadership skills through supervision and mentorship of veterinary support professionals
  • Exposure to advanced diagnostic investigations and a diverse emergency medical and surgical caseload
  • Career development opportunities involving increased clinical responsibility and participation in emergency service improvements
