Job Description: Our client is seeking an experienced Small Animal Associate Veterinarian to join a long-established, independently operated companion animal hospital offering a relaxed working environment and excellent schedule. This opportunity would suit a veterinarian who is already comfortable handling routine consultations, medical cases, dentistry, and general surgery without requiring close supervision. The position is designed around a four-day working week with no weekend commitments, no emergency responsibilities, and predictable daytime hours.
The caseload provides a balanced mix of morning appointments followed by surgical and dental procedures, with further consultations and patient discharges later in the day. Clinical facilities include an IDEXX in-house laboratory, digital radiography, and therapeutic laser equipment. Surgical work commonly includes spays, neuters, mass removals, dentistry, splenectomies, bladder procedures, and selected abdominal surgeries, while more complex orthopaedic cases can be referred externally.
This is an especially attractive opportunity for a veterinarian who values autonomy and would like to become an important part of a well-established community practice. Sole-charge work will form part of the role, with scope to expand available services over time. For the right individual, there may also be an opportunity to explore future practice ownership as the current owner gradually plans for retirement.
In this position, your responsibilities will include:
- Managing a varied schedule of small animal consultations and medical work-ups
- Performing routine soft tissue surgery and a broad range of dental procedures
- Using in-house diagnostics and digital imaging to investigate and manage cases
- Working independently and taking responsibility for clinical decisions during sole-charge periods
- Building lasting relationships with clients through practical, personalised veterinary care
Qualifications Needed:
- DVM or equivalent veterinary qualification with eligibility for Massachusetts licensure
- Previous small animal clinical experience, as this position is not intended for a new graduate
- Confidence handling routine consultations, dentistry, surgery, and everyday medical cases independently
- Sound clinical judgement with the ability to recognise when referral is appropriate
- Strong communication skills and an approachable, self-sufficient working style
Package:
- Four-day working week, typically Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday
- Daytime schedule of approximately 8am–5pm
- No weekend requirements
- No emergency or on-call responsibilities
- Three weeks of paid time off
- Health insurance provision available
- Opportunity to work with significant clinical independence and sole-charge responsibility
- IDEXX in-house laboratory, modern digital radiography, and therapeutic laser equipment
- Scope to broaden services and shape the future clinical offering
- Potential pathway towards future practice ownership for the right veterinarian
