Ophthalmologist Specialist Veterinarian Job, Anfield, Merseyside, England

Ophthalmologist Specialist Veterinarian Job, Anfield, Merseyside, England

Job Description: Our client is seeking an ambitious Veterinary Surgeon with an ophthalmology certificate, or someone approaching completion of this qualification, to help establish and expand a dedicated ophthalmology service. This opportunity offers the chance to develop a substantial caseload of ocular conditions, perform advanced diagnostic investigations and contribute to the introduction of specialised treatments. With a dedicated ophthalmology operating theatre and planned investment in clinical equipment, the successful candidate will have meaningful input into developing the facilities and shaping the direction of the service.

Initially combining ophthalmology consultations and procedures with general first-opinion veterinary duties, the position is expected to develop towards a predominantly ophthalmology-focused caseload within approximately three to six months. A substantial referral base offers excellent potential for increasing clinical exposure, while access to experienced ophthalmology colleagues provides opportunities for mentorship, case discussions and sharing advanced techniques. The working schedule comprises 40 hours per week, including a one-in-six weekend rotation, with occasional independent clinical responsibilities.

Qualifications Needed:

  • Current RCVS registration and recognised qualifications permitting veterinary practice in England
  • An ophthalmology postgraduate certificate already obtained or significant progress towards completing one
  • Confidence in routine small animal surgical procedures, medical consultations and independent clinical decision-making
  • A strong interest in developing advanced ocular diagnostic and surgical capabilities
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to manage referred cases and maintain effective professional relationships

Package:

  • Dedicated ophthalmology theatre facilities with opportunities to influence future diagnostic and surgical equipment investment
  • A structured 40-hour working week incorporating a one-in-six weekend rota
  • Excellent opportunities to establish a specialised ophthalmology caseload and progress towards predominantly advanced clinical work
  • Financial assistance for further postgraduate qualifications alongside access to experienced clinical mentors
  • Annual continuing professional development funding of £1,500 accompanied by three paid educational leave days
  • Five weeks of annual leave plus bank holidays, with additional entitlement available through continued service
  • Comprehensive private medical insurance and a healthcare cash plan provided from the beginning of employment
  • Professional registration and membership fees covered for RCVS, VDS and BVA
  • Life assurance protection equivalent to three times annual salary, together with an additional paid personal leave day
  • Confidential counselling assistance, potential extended career breaks and commuting benefits including cycle purchase and season ticket arrangements
