Job Description: Our client is seeking an experienced General Manager to lead a large Emergency & Referral Veterinary Hospital in Halifax. This is a senior leadership opportunity suited to an individual with substantial experience operating complex emergency and specialty facilities. The successful candidate will oversee strategic direction, financial performance, operational excellence, and team development within a high-acuity hospital environment.
Experience working alongside Veterinary Specialists is essential, as this hospital operates within an advanced referral setting. There is a strong preference for a Veterinarian, ideally a Boarded Criticalist or Internist, who is interested in transitioning into a non-clinical managerial leadership role. The position requires proven experience managing a large Emergency & Referral hospital, with responsibility for budgeting, staffing, compliance, and performance metrics.
This role combines strategic oversight with day-to-day operational leadership. The General Manager will partner closely with medical leadership and department heads to ensure strong financial stewardship, high clinical standards, effective HR management, and an exceptional client and patient experience.
Responsibilities:
- Lead operational and administrative management of a large Emergency & Referral hospital
- Drive financial performance, budgeting, revenue growth, and cost control
- Oversee HR functions including hiring, onboarding, performance management, and conflict resolution
- Collaborate with Specialists and Medical Leadership to support service expansion and clinical excellence
- Ensure regulatory compliance, accreditation standards, and operational SOP adherence
Qualifications Needed:
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) preferred, ideally Boarded Criticalist or Internist
- Proven experience managing a large Emergency & Referral Veterinary Hospital
- Strong background in financial oversight with direct P&L responsibility
- Experience working closely with Veterinary Specialists
- Demonstrated leadership capability in complex, multi-department hospital environments
Package:
- Base salary between $120,000 – $150,000
