Equine Associate Veterinarian Job, Invercargill, Southland, New Zealand

Job Description: Our client is seeking a highly skilled Equine Surgeon or an experienced Equine Veterinarian with substantial surgical expertise to take on a rewarding position within a purpose-built equine hospital. This opportunity is ideal for a board-certified or board-eligible surgeon looking to establish a long-term clinical career, with the prospect of gradually assuming responsibility for an established surgical caseload as part of a planned succession arrangement.

The position offers exposure to a diverse equine caseload involving Standardbred and Thoroughbred racehorses alongside sport and pleasure horses. Surgical activity currently includes approximately 55–65 standing and table procedures annually, complemented by lameness investigations, performance assessments, emergency interventions and ambulatory services. Clinical facilities include an equipped surgical theatre with arthroscopy capabilities, digital radiography, ultrasound, video endoscopy, gastroscopy and comprehensive laboratory diagnostics.

Working alongside experienced equine veterinarians and dedicated veterinary technicians, the successful candidate will have access to collaborative clinical support and opportunities to further develop specialist surgical services. A shared emergency rota and adaptable scheduling arrangements provide additional flexibility, while the role offers considerable scope for professional autonomy and long-term career progression.

Package:

  • Access to a dedicated equine surgical suite equipped for arthroscopic procedures.
  • Annual professional development funding of up to NZD $2,200.
  • Flexible working arrangements tailored to the successful candidate’s circumstances.
  • Participation in a shared emergency duty rota with additional on-call remuneration.
  • Annual veterinary registration and professional association membership fees covered.
  • Clinical collaboration with five equine veterinarians and four experienced veterinary technicians.
  • Temporary accommodation available during the initial employment period.
  • Chamber of Commerce membership benefits providing access to local retail savings.
  • Opportunities to develop advanced surgical expertise across a varied equine referral caseload.
  • A well-equipped clinical environment with modern diagnostic imaging and laboratory facilities.
