Small Animal Associate Veterinarian Job, Ontario, Canada

vet

Job Details:  This is a privately owned multi-veterinarian practice (4 DVMs working in total, currently 2 FTE hospital trying to grow to 3 FTE). This hospital has two sister hospitals, there is no need to cover shifts at any of the other hospitals but there is collaboration amongst all 3 practices.

The owners are extremely progressive and utilize a lot of technology to make things easier for the team (ex. PetDesk appointment reminder/booking software, Slack for internal messaging, digital xrays, ultrasound, all new equipment and open to any equipment/technology suggestions from the team). A practice manager overlooks the team and general business management and finds solutions for any concerns the team has.

Team:

  • 4 DVMs, 2 FTE (2 DVMs on at all times, trying to grow to 3 DVMs on at all times)
  • 5 RVTs (who work as Exam Room Assistants as well)
  • 5 Assistants
  • 3 Receptionists

Layout/equipment:

1) There is a big reception area that accesses the 4 large exam rooms (1 doubles as a comfort room).

2) All exam rooms have double doors, one to reception, one to the pharmacy hallway behind the exam rooms. All exam rooms have a foldable table, computer, and all supplies needed for examinations.

3) Separate surgical suite and treatment/dental suite

4) Digital dental and full body X-Ray machines

5) Ultrasound available as well

6) Large DVM office that can support 5-6 DVMs at one time

PIMS Software: Avimark

Hours of Operation: Monday – Friday: 9am – 6pm, closed stat holidays

Appointment Times: 30 min appointments, 1 hour lunch plus 1.5 hours of paid time to catch up on follow-ups/record keeping

Staff Support in appointments:

1) Exam Room Technician trained to support DVMs in all appointments.

2) When client comes in, reception will bring the client/pet to the room. Exam Room Technician will collect weight, temperature, heart rate and breathing rate and a brief history and put it into the computer system.

3) Tech will then debrief with the DVM outside, and both will come up with a game plan. DVM and tech go into the room for the physical exam and discuss recommendations.

4) DVM just makes recommendations, if clients ask for pricing, Exam Room technician will discuss (DVM should not discuss pricing with clients, so that DVM’s recommendations are not influenced). If client declines, tech will decline on notes.

5) Once client approves all diagnostics/treatments, DVM and Tech leave and Tech works with other technician/assistants to complete all diagnostics and treatments. Technicians will make sure the DVM has all diagnostic results ready for review.

Staff Support in Surgeries:

Soft-tissue surgeries

1) Technicians collect all vitals for the patient and confirm the anesthesia protocol with the surgeon. Once protocol confirmed, tech will induce/prep the patient for surgery.

2) Tech will call the DVM once the pet is ready for surgery and DVM will go into the surgical suite to do the surgery.

3) Once DVM is finished surgery, technician team will do all post-op care.

4) If there is another surgery, another tech/tech assistant team will have the next patient ready for the surgeon.

Dentals

1) Technicians collect all vitals for the patient and confirm the anesthesia protocol with the surgeon. Once protocol confirmed, tech will induce/prep the patient for surgery.

2) Tech will do full-mouth dental radiographs for the pet and send to the DVM to review

3) Tech will then start scaling and cleaning

4) Once cleaning complete, tech will call the DVM to do extractions if there are any needed

5) Once DVM is finished extractions, the technician team will do all post-op care.

Mentorship:

The practice owners are both exceptional DVMs who are happy to provide mentorship for the right candidate!

One is an experienced surgeon and dentist, and gets surgery referrals from many of the surrounding hospitals. He would make a wonderful mentor for someone who is interested in doing all types of soft tissue surgeries.

The other has been practicing as a DVM for over 30 years and always strives to provide the best medical care for our patients. She has slowed down her veterinary practice to focus on the business, allowing her to support the DVMs as a coach. She is a wonderful mentor for exam room communications and for any/all types of medical cases. She is happy to make herself available anytime a second opinion is needed, and can do her administrative work from the hospital to provide you with support.
